Day 70 to Day 80 – 13 to 23 August 2018
The following is a highly summarised account of our amazing time in Croatia with family and time off the bikes. As we took so many videos and photos of our experience we figured we would keep the words to a minimum and let the media talk for itself. Overall, we owe a massive thanks to Tina, Goran and his super welcoming family for an unreal experience 😘.
Tina impersonating our new way of like – this is hilarious:
Places we visited and stuff we ate:
Motovun: old hill top city (and I mean solid 1 hour hike to hill top 😳) in central Istria – largest peninsula in Adriatic sea) where the truffles are plentiful. Think the Eyrie Castle in Game of Thrones.
Rovinj: beautiful marble cobbled old seaside town where shade is hard to come by but the swimming options are plentiful and the pizza is on point.
Hiking Risnjak: epic hike day 40000+ steps with over 1km of vertical elevation. Epic and I mean seriously epic climatic view once reach summit. Would love to repeat this one in future and stay a night in hut near the top (only 80kuna with ur own sheets! About $20AUD). Cherry Strudel at the end of the hike was unbelievably good. In my experience the one off small restuarant near a hiking destination can serve pretty average over priced food. This place was an exception.
Rijeka: biggest seaside town in the area made for a good spot for dinner and what a dinner. Found a winner pizzeria down this Melbourne style alleyway.
Beach Ica: short walk from Lovran this small pier side beach is infamous for the iconic burger joint Archie’s located just offshore. This was a super relaxing day in the sun.
Split-ing over land and sea: Drove to split to catch a ferry to the island of Korcula well South of the Croatian coast. Whole day road tripping but with plenty of time to enjoy the views a majestic sunset.
Fun in the sun in Blato: spent a few days with Gorans family soaking up a lot of UV, paddle boarding, celebrating a families epic 60th bday and of course feasting on several different Croatian dishes (and also worth a mention was the copious amounts of French toast consumed 😬). Our time down South was the most relaxing holiday we have had in a long time and we honestly thoroughly enjoyed it. Goran’s family were above and beyond with hospitality and made us feel like part of the family. We really can’t thank them enough for this and only hope one day they will visit us when we are set up again so we can return the favour 🤞.
Worth a mention was the new reference pizza at Alfa in Vela Luca (near Blato) on the island. These guys do hands down the best thin crust Italian style (or should I say Croatian 🤔) pepperoni pizza. Seriously I would head there just for the pizza!!! 5/5 on #BeausChilliScale
Homeward bound via Zadar: headed back to Lovran as G&T will soon be heading back to Aus and we have to get riding again (have almost forgot what it feels like to turn a pedal…). Stopped in Zadar and heard the magical sea surf powdered man made organs and the old town. Very beautiful city laid out flat and easy to navigate. Scored to good pizza at Crazy Pizza (no reference mind you but pretty good) and also enjoyed some more baked goods to fuel us for the car journey.
Dinner in Rijeka was a Mexican affair and was pretty on point.
Final day in Croatia: as I write this entry we are currently packing up our gear and ditching anything not worth carrying (Tina is unknowingly muling for us). Feeling of a heavy heart as I write this as this will be the last time I see my big sis and Goran for quite a while 😢. Really can’t thank them enough for acting as parents and looking out for us during a time here in Croatia. Love you guys 🙂.
